But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. (The words of Jesus, Matthew 12:36-37)

Wow! Am I in trouble! Careless words flow so easily from my mouth, wreaking havoc and revealing the condition of my heart. So, what are careless words anyway? Could they be:

Words spoken in haste (Proverbs 29:20)
Too many words (Proverbs 10:19)
Words that speak evil of others (Exodus 20:28; Matthew 5:21-22)
Unwholesome words (Ephesians 4:29)
Evil words – lying (Proverbs 6:16-19), deceitful (Romans 16:18), filthy
(Ephesians 5:4)
Words that take the Lord’s name in vain (Exodus 20:7)

How much better it would be if I were careful with my words – seeking words that:

  • Edify – encourage and build uo (Ephesians 4:29)
  • Express thankfulness (Ephesians 5:3-4)

If I were more diligent in replacing my careless words with edifying and grateful words, I would not only please God, but my family would be happier! Will you join me this week in saying with David,

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. (Psalm 19:14)

Sharing the journey with you,
