After a recent upset in a basketball game during March Madness, a player on the team that had been the underdog was asked how they won the game. The player with much joy said that analytics rarely measure the heart of the competitors. Predictions can be faulty when only numbers are considered.

God said something similar when Samuel was choosing from the sons of Jesse to be the King of Israel. The Lord warned him,

“…The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” I Samuel 16:7

The attitudes, motivation and passions of my heart matter! Yet what I tend to measure are my activities and “good” deeds.

Let’s say as King David, the one Samuel chose, said:

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  Psalm 139:23 NIV
