The incredible noise and frenetic activity was intoxicating. My wife, Pamela, and I were at the Hungarian Grand Prix time trials. Trying to pick the winners of each time trial was fun as my wife chose by the color and design of the car and I chose by the driver.

However, predicting the winner of a car race is not so easy. Success is more dependent on what cannot be seen – the engine, fuel mixtures and other internal components -rather than what can be seen – the car decals and color or even the driver.

The same is true in following Jesus. When I don’t pay attention to what is “under the hood” of my car, failure is imminent. Tuning my engine, that is attending to and evaluating my life as it relates to God's guiding principles, has consequences. Joshua, the leader of the children of Israel, was told by God how to tune his engine.

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8,9 NIV)

Now that’s the secret to a well tuned engine! Will you join me in looking under the hood and attending to our engines this week?

Sharing the journey with you,
