"I assist people of means in wealth management" — certainly a noble profession. However, this breakfast conversation stirred my thoughts on "wealth management". Wise utilization of resources accrues much benefit. Wisdom in this area moves me from:
- Thoughtless spending to disciplined budgeting,
- Debt acquisition to saving and investing,
- Selfish consumption to generous giving.
Interestingly, Jesus spoke often of our attitudes and actions related to our wealth. But Jesus never viewed wealth management as only material. Jesus' prime concern was our acquisition of spiritual possessions. I have to ask myself, "How am I doing with my spiritual wealth management?"
God has showered me with spiritual riches — His loving redemption, His merciful forgiveness, His precious Son. Also God offers a wealth of spiritual qualities: wisdom and understanding (Proverbs 2:1-5), justice and righteousness (Is.33:5), and holiness (Ephesians 1:4). Yet when it comes to spiritual wealth management I am too often:
- Slovenly rather than disciplined,
- Indifferent rather than passionate,
- Selfish rather than generous.
Without a disciplined acceptance and utilitization of the spiritual riches available from God, spiritual poverty is a high probability.
Wealth management – both material and spiritual – affects our future. Let us begin considering our passions and our choices in our wealth management — both material and spiritual!
