Is there any way to describe the pace of modern life other than – crazy busy? We live in a 24 hour society with non-stop opportunity to eat, drink and be entertained. I need more discipline than ever to rest and find solitude. As always Jesus provides a model for me as I navigate modern society.

Jesus also was crazy busy. In the midst of teaching, healing, feeding thousands and calming storms, Jesus was resolute to find solitude and rest. He did not allow the interruptions of daily life to deter him from his main priority to be with his Father.
…because so many people were coming and going that they did not have a chance to eat, he (Jesus) said to them (the disciples), Come with me by yourselves to find a quiet place and get some rest.  (Mark 6:31 NIV)
Life was demanding. On the way to rest, Jesus stopped to feed the 5000. Afterward, determined to find time with the Father, He sent the disciples to the other side of the Sea of Galilee while He went off to seek the Father. Soon a storm brewed, overtaking the disciples. And, you know the rest – Jesus came and calmed the sea.

Sandwiched between feeding the 5000 and quieting the storm, Jesus went up to the mountain to pray. (Mark 6:46b NIV). He refused to let the demands overtake Him. He insisted on seeking the Father.

Living life on the run, I so easily allow interruptions to prevent me from time with my heavenly Father, which I desperately want. Solitude is hard to find in a frenetic world. Will you join me in resolutely pursuing solitude and rest with the Father?

Sharing the journey with you,
