As a young boy, visits from my maternal grandparents were infrequent but much anticipated. After they visited, I could count on one of my friends saying, "Who was with you on Saturday, they looked like Amish!!" My grandparents were godly people for whom part of their act of worship was dressing distinctively. I hardly noticed their dress for I loved and admired them for who they were…but others noticed.

Although I did not grow up in a community that emphasized dress as a part of religious tradition, I was, at times, smug regarding this issue. I was certain that dressing distinctively was not a measure of faith. True as that may be, I failed to realize that as followers of Jesus our clothing, indeed, should be distinctive.

The Apostle Paul tells us, Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. (Colossians 3:12-15 NIV) Just think how distinctively dressed we would be!

Paul also said to the Romans …clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ…. (Romans 13:14) What radical clothing! Let’s look at the clothes "hanging in our closet". Do they look like Jesus?
