For six years I was a morning newspaper delivery boy. During those quiet, lonely, early morning hours, I often day dreamed about my future. I imagined playing baseball in the major leagues or basketball at a Division l college. Some of my dreams never came true.

Also during those early morning hours I imagined my life as a pediatrician. Later this dream came to fruition, although not exactly as I had imagined since I became an emergency physician instead.

Much of my future, however, I could never have imagined. Thank goodness that in the hands of God, the future has hope when it looks dismal and purpose when it’s different than I planned.

In the Bible many people experienced God’s care of their futures which were beyond what they could have imagined.

  • Joseph in the midst of family conflict, slavery and prison…could hardly imagine how God would use him to save many lives.
  • Gideon in the preparation for battle…could hardly imagine how only 300 soldiers could win the battle let alone bring glory to God.
  • David in the midst of moral failure…could never have imagined that God would someday describe him as a man after His own heart.

We cannot imagine what the future holds but we can entrust the future to the One who is already there. Will you join me in entrusting our futures into God’s hands rather than our own imaginations?

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen (Ephesians 3:20, 21)
