Observing the fans of my favorite American baseball team, the Philadelphia Phillies, is an activity unto itself. Decked out in red Phillies gear, they shout encouragement with every pitch of the baseball. There is no mistaking a Phillies' fan! Yet, one bad game exposes the fickle fan with his flickering optimism and frequent sarcasm. The test of loyalty for a true Phillies fan occurs when the game goes bad.

I would suggest that identifying Jesus' true friends from His fickle friends has similarities. During Jesus' time on earth, his miracles and his authoritative teaching amazed many. However, the test came when Jesus described the cost of following him – many turned away.

Later, Jesus said,

You are my friends if you do what I command. (John 15:14 NIV)

Being a fickle fan of a professional sports team can be humorous at times. However, there is no humor in being a fickle friend of Jesus.

Please join me in doing exactly what he commands.

Sharing the journey with you,

Bob Snyder
