As an emergency physician, I always assessed vital signs. Checking heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate and temperature gave me clues about the health of my patients, what needed attention and what treatment to give.

Spiritually, vital signs are important as well. God assesses my spiritual health when I go to Him,

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23,24 NIV)

Allowing God to evaluate my spiritual vital signs gives clues to what needs attention and treatment in my life. He checks:

My appetite — thirst (Psalm 42:1-2) and hunger (Matthew 4:4)
My heart — loving (I John 4:19-21) and forgiving (Matthew 18:21-35)
My eyesight — awareness of God’s presence (Jeremiah 23:24) and ability to see sin and                confess (I John 1:5-10)
My habits — godliness (I Timothy 4:8); relationships (Hebrews 10:23-25); loving & serving            (Luke 10:25-37) and my mind (Colossians 3:1-2)

When my spiritual vital signs are normal — my fear is replaced by peace, my anger is replaced by gentleness & patience, and my selfishness is replaced by love.

I need to have God check my spiritual vital signs immediately. Do you?
