I used to enjoy teaching resident doctors the art of medicine – how to communicate to patients, showing them kindness and compassion. However, this caused me to pause when I considered my heart and conduct at home.

Lecturing is easy; living it is difficult. Returning home from a hard day or night in the emergency department to my wife and three small children tested me. I could so easily make excuses for my unkind words and desire pity for my fatigue.

This is true in our faith walk. Verbal ascent to loving God and my neighbor is much easier than actually loving God and neighbor. When my conduct belies my belief, my heart is truly revealed.

Who can touch and change my heart? Only God. Paul says

. . . Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. (Philippians 2:12b-13)

It seems that I need the work of God in my heart. Will you join me in inviting Him to do His work?

Sharing the journey with you,
